By mid-day, they had finished the baking for the day, and Aunt Tricia had gone home to freshen up and rest a bit. Lucy and Hannah attended to the customers trooping into the bakery at intervals, and they had almost run out of cupcakes.

She took a break and went into the kitchen to get herself a glass of water, and when she returned to the dining area, Hannah was attending to the last customer in front of the counter.

Lucy beamed when she recognized the lady as the one who had suggested the idea of decorating the bakery the last time she was around.

“I love what you’ve done,” the lady said as she handed Hannah cash for her order. “You see that the decorations really give the place the life and vibe it needs for the season.”

“You were right,” Lucy agreed and they both laughed.

“Although there is one thing missing,” the lady continued and looked around the bakery. “Some—”

“Some music,” Lucy said before she could complete her sentence. “I know we need some music to lighten the mood. I’m installing a new sound system today, so when next you’re here, you’ll be rocking back and forth to some festive tunes. You can count on that.”

The lady winked at her, got her package from Hannah, and headed for the door just at the same time it opened, and a sales rep from the electronic store walked in.

“Hi.” Lucy quickly went around the counter to greet the man who offered to install her speakers the previous day.

“This shouldn’t take me long to install,” the man said as he accepted her handshake. Lucy pointed him towards the shelf where she had the previous speaker, and he excused himself to start work.

She returned to the back of the counter and stood there chatting with Hannah about her experience at the electronic store while the man worked on the installation. It took him a few minutes to get the speaker working, then he asked Lucy to connect her phone through Bluetooth to the device and play a song.

Lucy chose It’s Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas from her playlist, and as the soft sounds filled the air, she started tapping her fingers. She turned to Hannah and said, “Truly, music makes all the difference.”

“I agree,” Hannah said.

The sales rep walked over to the counter where they stood and offered Lucy a card. “Here is a company number in case you need anything else. The system comes with a year warranty, so if it develops a fault that isn’t due to damage, you can bring it back.”

“Oh, I didn’t know that,” Lucy said, wondering why the nosy sales guy she encountered yesterday didn’t think to mention that part. “Thank you…”

“Jay,” he offered.

“Thank you, Jay,” she repeated. Then, she reached into the counter for the bag of cupcakes she had packed for him while he worked. “Here is a present for you,” she said as she extended the pack.

Jay’s lips curved into a smile. “You’re very kind. Thank you.
